FORM I-9 BASICS

As many employers and HR professionals know, the Form I-9 is an unusually complicated form, that is required for every employee hired.  What many employers don’t know is that a company’s Forms I-9 can be audited by the government at any time, and can and do fine employers for errors on the form.  Paperwork fines can range between $216.00-2126.00 PER VIOLATION.  That means fines can add up quickly!

Given the high financial cost, simple paperwork errors can cost you, Celebrezze Law strongly recommends you consider a Forms I-9 audit and training session.  In the meantime, here are a few important reminders to cut down on the most common errors.

1. RETENTION: Remember that a Form I-9 is required to be on file for each employee for three years from the date of hire or one year from the date employment, whichever is LATER.

2. TIMING: The Form I-9 is a time sensitive document, make sure each section of the form is completed timely and completely!

3. UP-TO-DATE FORM: Ensure you’re using the current Form I-9.  A new form is coming in early 2017!
